Summary

Marvel Studios may be teasing the formation of the MCU's Midnight Sons, although there's no official confirmation. Many supernatural characters debuted in the Multiverse Saga, including Werewolf by Night, Man-Thing, Moon Knight and Dane Whitman, and Blade is on his way in Phase 5. Several other Midnight Sons members have been confirmed to arrive in the MCU soon, including Hood, Jennifer Kale and Wolverine.

Marvel Studios has already planted many clues hinting at the pending formation of the long-awaited Midnight Sons team in the MCU. Marvel Comics' Midnight Sons team made their first full appearance in 1992's Ghost Rider (Vol. 3) #31, bringing together some of the Marvel Universe's most powerful supernatural heroes and anti-heroes to battle some of Marvel Comics' darkest threats. Although there has been no official confirmation from Marvel Studios, there are many rumors that the Midnight Sons team is forming in the MCU, and the Multiverse Saga included many teases pointing to this exciting team joining forces soon.

The original Midnight Sons team in Marvel Comics was made up of nine powerful and mystical characters, including Nightstalkers Blade, Frank Drake and Hannibal King, Morbius, Danny Ketch's Ghost Rider, former Ghost Rider Johnny Blaze and Darkhold Redeemers Sam Buchanan, Victoria Montesi and Louise Hastings. The team was first formed to fight Lilith, Mother of All Demons, assembled with the help of Doctor Strange, and later they would face adversaries such as Zarathos, Dracula and Mephisto. In recent years, Marvel Studios has given many hints that the Midnight Sons will be forming in the MCU, although it is not yet known exactly when.

10Werewolf By Night introduced monsters to the MCU

Werewolf By Night was the MCU's first special presentation

Before Phase 4 of the MCU, the idea of monsters and supernatural threats hadn't really been explored. Michael Giacchino's special presentation of Werewolf by Night marked a major shift in this respect, as many iconic Marvel Comics monsters were teased, while Gael García Bernal's Jack Russell, aka Werewolf by Night, and Man-Thing were introduced in full force. Both Werewolf by Night and Man-Thing are members of later Midnight Sons teams in Marvel Comics, so reuniting the team in the MCU would be a great way to continue their uncertain stories after escaping Bloodstone Manor in Werewolf by Night.

Gabriel Luna's Ghost Rider, Robbie Reyes, in Agents of SHIELD

Although Ghost Rider has not yet entered the MCU proper, it has been confirmed that the popular character exists in the MCU multiverse, which means that it may not be long before he makes his official debut in the MCU. Nicolas Cage played Johnny Blaze's Ghost Rider in 2007's Ghost Rider and its 2011 sequel, Spirit of Vengeance, while Gabriel Luna debuted as Robbie Reyes' Ghost Rider in Season 4 of Marvel Television's Agents of SHIELD. Blade is one of the most legendary members of Marvel Comics' Midnight Sons team, and Mahershala Ali will bring him to live action in 2025. Before the vampire hunter's debut, however, Marvel Studios has been teasing the existence of MCU vampires. In 2022's She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, they introduced Terrence Clowe's Saracen, a vampire who frequents Emil Blonsky's retreat. In Marvel Comics, Saracen was an adversary of Blade's who resided under Vatican City and, although his true origins in the MCU are unknown, his inclusion in Phase 4 proved that vampires do exist.

7Eternals teased Dane Whitman's future as the Black Knight

As well as introducing a new MCU team, Eternals 2021 also debuted Kit Harrington's Dane Whitman. In Marvel Comics, Whitman wields the Ebony Blade as the Black Knight, a powerful legacy hero who fights among many superhero teams. Although the Black Knight is not involved with the Midnight Sons in Marvel Comics, the post-credits scene of Eternals teased Whitman wielding the Ebony Blade, although he was interrupted by Mahershala Ali's first voice as Blade, warning that Whitman may not be ready. The connection established between Whitman and Blade means that the Black Knight is likely to be part of the MCU's Midnight Sons team.

Kit Harrington was originally planned to appear in Marvel Studios' reboot of Blade alongside Mahershala Ali, but recent rumors suggest that he may have been removed from the script, leaving his future in the MCU unknown.

6 Oscar Isaac expressed the hopes of his midnight children

Moon Knight's MCU future is unclear at the moment

Oscar Isaac made his debut as Marc Spector, and his alters Steven Grant and Jake Lockley, in 2022's Moon Knight, bringing the Fist of Khonshu to life in the darkest corners of the MCU. Although Moon Knight's future in the MCU is still unclear, Oscar Isaac expressed his hopes for Moon Knight joining the Midnight Sons team during an appearance at the Middle East Film and Comic Con (via X). Oscar Isaac's Midnight Sons hopes are well-deserved, as Moon Knight is a fantastic addition to Marvel Comics' Midnight Sons team and would fit in with the MCU team's bold tones.

I thought there was an interesting opportunity with Midnight Suns. There are such interesting characters there, and now that we've laid the groundwork to learn who Marc, Steven and Jake are, it could be an interesting opportunity to see them as part of a team and what that dynamic would be. So I think it would be exciting, I think for me, I definitely hope there's some room to explore that possibility.

5 WandaVision presented Darkhold from the MCU

The Darkhold was apparently destroyed in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

Although the MCU's Darkhold, the Book of the Damned, was destroyed in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the fact that it exists means that the Darkhold Redeemers could also be in the MCU. This team protected the Darkhold, making sure it didn't fall into the wrong hands, and three of the team members helped form the original Midnight Sons team. There was no mention of the Darkhold Redeemers in the MCU, but as Kathryn Hahn's Agatha Harkness was in possession of the book, the Redeemers could be seen in the MCU's Agatha: Darkhold Diaries.

Marvel Comics' Darkhold Redeemers consisted of Louise Hastings, Victoria Montesi, Sam Buchanan, Jinx and Modred the Mystic, none of whom have yet been seen in the MCU.

4 Elsa Bloodstone was considered a very powerful figure

Laura Donnelly portrayed Elsa Bloodstone in Werewolf at Night

As well as introducing many monsters to the world of the MCU, Werewolf by Night 2022 also debuted monster hunters. One of them, Laura Donnelly's Elsa Bloodstone, went over to the side of Werewolf by Night and Jack Russell's Man-Thing, and eventually took control of the mystical Bloodstone and Bloodstone Manor, her birthright. Her possession of the Bloodstone, which has the ability to track and hurt monsters, makes Elsa Bloodstone incredibly powerful, so she may have been created as the Nick Fury figure of the Midnight Sons team, with Bloodstone Manor perhaps becoming the team's base of operations in the MCU.

3Darranger became a darker character in Phase 4

Doctor Strange experimented with Darkhold in Phase 4 of the MCU

While Elsa Bloodstone could certainly become the Nick Fury figure for the MCU's Midnight Sons, that duty is more likely to fall to Benedict Cumberbatch's Doctor Strange, who takes on a similar role in Marvel Comics. Fortunately, Phase 4 saw Doctor Strange become a much more twisted superhero, as he became involved with the Darkhold, inhabited the corpse of his variant and generated a third eye in Doctor Strange's final moments in the Multiverse of Madness. Although Strange is currently off-world dealing with an impending incursion, he could return to reunite some of the MCU's most unorthodox heroes as the first Midnight Sons.

Marvel Studios has dabbled with supernatural characters in separate, standalone stories until now, but Mahershala Ali's debut as Eric Brooks in the MCU's upcoming Blade reboot may begin to unite those stories. Blade is perhaps the most iconic member of the Midnight Sons, and a very exciting addition to Phase 5 of the MCU, especially with Ali's casting, and 2025's Blade is expected to expand the supernatural corners of the MCU. Blade will include vampires, hunters and monsters of all kinds, perfectly setting the tone for the Midnight Sons team and perhaps even providing the first hint at the team's formation.
