Jumanji was one of the most popular adventure and fantasy films of the 1990s and, according to The Numbers, grossed more than 260 million dollars. The successor, 2005's Zathura - A Space Adventure, tells the story of another board game journey in space, but failed to recoup its production costs. Perhaps that's why the franchise lay dormant for so long.

Only in 2017, 21 years after the first film, was the series continued with Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. The remake starring Dwayne Johnson grossed almost 1 billion dollars and is currently available in the Netflix and Telecine catalog.

What is the story of Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle?

Four teenagers find a video game whose action takes place in a tropical forest. Excited about the game, they choose their avatars for the challenge, but an unexpected event causes them to be transported into the fictional universe, becoming the characters in the adventure.

Suddenly, they find themselves in the bodies of the game's characters, which include the muscular Dr. Smolder Bravestone (Dwayne Johnson), his slender companion Moose Finbar (Kevin Hart), the Amazonian fighter Ruby Roundhouse (Karen Gillan) and the well-informed professor Shelly Oberon (Jack Black). Together, they must overcome the challenges of the game if they want to return to their world.

The great universe of Jumanji continues

Although the remake brings back the world of the jungle, it makes no other reference to the plot and characters of the original movie. The only reference is to the board game that drew children into the adventure in the 1996 movie. In 2019, Jumanji: Next Phase was released as a direct sequel to the second part. But that's not all, as part 4 of Jumanji is definitely in the works.

In addition to Johnson, the other main actors will also be returning to the set. According to speculation, the plot could revolve around the video game characters being transported to the real world.
