Senator Chico Rodrigues disputes Macron's comments on Mercosur-European Union agreement
Senator Chico Rodrigues (PSB-RR) criticized French President Emmanuel Macron's statements on the trade agreement between Mercosur and the European Union. In his speech in plenary, he highlighted the importance of the pact for Brazil's economic development and warned of the possible negative impacts of a review of the agreement at this time.
Macron argued that the text of the agreement does not address environmental and biodiversity issues, which led the French president to propose a revision of the pact. However, Chico Rodrigues pointed out that the negotiations between the two economic blocs have been going on for two decades and any abrupt change could harm important sectors of the Brazilian economy.
The senator emphasized the importance of Brazilian agricultural production for world food security, especially in the midst of the global food crisis. He warned that failure in the negotiations could result in the loss of opportunities to diversify trade partners and maintain Brazil's dependence on China, which imports most of Brazil's agricultural products.
Faced with the concerns raised by Macron, Chico Rodrigues defended the continuity of the agreement and stressed the need to maintain the progress and consensus already achieved. He stressed that Brazil is an emerging economy that needs access to the world's richest markets in order to grow and prosper.
Senator Chico Rodrigues' position reflects his concern about the possible consequences of a revision of the agreement between Mercosur and the European Union, highlighting the importance of the pact for the economic development and food security not only of Brazil, but also of the world.
