Finally confirmed: Beetlejuice 2 reveals who summons Michael Keaton's ghost again (and I'm surprised)

Beetlejuice 2 features new images revealing that Lydia Deetz summons Beetlejuice again, hinting at a force more dangerous than him in the afterlife. The CinemaCon images give more context as to how Michael Keaton returns, with Lydia saying the iconic phrase to summon him. At the end of the original movie, Lydia had already summoned Beetlejuice to save her loved ones. Now, her decision to summon him again seems to be linked to the safety of her daughter, Astrid. The official synopsis suggests that Lydia is trying to save her daughter from danger in the afterlife, indicating that something more dangerous than Beetlejuice is at play.

New extended images of Beetlejuice 2 from CinemaCon give more context on how Michael Keaton's character returns, including a confirmation of which character summons him with the dreaded three-word phrase. While teasing its upcoming slate of films in 2024 and early 2025, Warner Bros. released extended footage of Beetlejuice at CinemaCon, with Tim Burton's sequel set to hit theaters on September 6, 2024. While much of the footage was similar to what was included in the first trailer, it included some shocking new details about the interactions of new and old Beetlejuice 2 characters with Michael Keaton's titular poltergeist.

The first teaser trailer for Tim Burton's Beetlejuice revealed the Deetz family reuniting in Winter River after the death of Jeffrey Jones' Charles Deetz, which ended with a scene of Beetlejuice being summoned in front of a shocked Lydia. At the time, it was unclear who actually repeated Beetlejuice's name three times before he rose from the model of the town in the attic, and the reason for the call still remains a mystery. However, the new footage finally reveals the iconic character who summons him in Beetlejuice 2, which is quite a surprise after the events of the original 1988 film.

Now, new images from Beetlejuice 2 confirm that Lydia Deetz summons Michael Keaton's character in the sequel. According to the teaser, Winona Ryder's Lydia says, "I can't believe I'm doing this," before saying his name three times. Consequently, her shocked face when he comes out of the attic seems to be based on the notion that the summoning has worked and she now has to face the character again, and not simply a reaction to the idea that he has returned. Although there were theories that Astrid was responsible for summoning him after stumbling across Adam and Barbara Maitland's city model in the Beetlejuice 2 trailer, Lydia being the culprit means that his return was no accident.

At the end of the original Beetlejuice movie, it was also Winona Ryder's Lydia Deetz who summoned him to the realm of the living. This means that Lydia summoned Michael Keaton's character twice, which she wouldn't do unless someone she loves was in grave danger. The only reason teenage Lydia summoned Beetlejuice in the 1988 movie was because Adam and Barbara were dying due to Otho's accidental exorcism, and she believed that Keaton's "bioexorcist" was the only one who could save them. With Lydia now the mother of Jenna Ortega's teenage Astrid in Beetlejuice 2, it seems more than likely that her decision to summon Beetlejuice again has to do with her daughter's life being in danger.

Apparently, like Lydia herself, the audience will initially find it hard to believe that she is summoning him again after all the chaos he caused in the original movie. After the teenage Lydia summoned Beetlejuice, he tried to force her to marry him so that he could remain permanently in the realm of the living, and tried to harm the Maitlands on several occasions. Knowing that Keaton's character would do everything possible to break his ban, it's hard to understand why Lydia would expose her teenage daughter to the possibility of Beetlejuice trying to do the same thing to Astrid.

The official synopsis for Beetlejuice 2 explains that problems arise in both the realms of the living and the dead, so the best potential explanation for Lydia summoning Beetlejuice again would be that she is trying to save Astrid from danger in the afterlife. With Adam and Barbara absent from the story of Beetlejuice 2 and Lydia no longer able to rely on them for help in the afterlife, it seems that Michael Keaton's character was her last resort in trying to find help among the dead. Even more frightening, it suggests that there is a force more dangerous to Astrid, Lydia and the members of the Deetz family than Beetlejuice himself.
