On the Edge of Tomorrow: Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt at the helm of a box office hit

A blockbuster with Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt at the helm.

In the near future, the new scenario on Earth has put an end to life as we know it. Hordes of aliens have waged a fierce battle against the planet and humanity, and they really do seem invincible: no army in the world has managed to defeat them. So when Commander Bill Cage, who has no battlefield experience whatsoever, is sent without explanation on what appears to be a suicide mission, he doesn't seem to stand a chance.

To no one's surprise, Cage (played by Tom Cruise again in an extraterrestrial sci-fi after War of the Worlds) dies within minutes. However, the protagonist's life doesn't end there.

Instead, the character is thrown into an infinite time loop, condemned to relive the same battle over and over again, dying each time. Thus, as he faces a new fight, the commander learns new combat techniques that ensure he is more resilient against his alien enemies.

That's the premise, interesting to say the least, of the thrilling science fiction feature film The Edge of Tomorrow, a movie that celebrates nothing less than its tenth anniversary in 2024 and which, if you haven't seen it yet, is worth discovering (or rediscovering) as we prepare for a possible sequel. If we've convinced you, take note: you'll find it in the Max and Prime Video catalogs.

Released in 2014, Edge of Tomorrow was directed by Doug Liman (Mr. and Mrs. Smith) and features Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt at the helm. Action, humor, originality and a pair of protagonists who work to perfection converge in a fast-paced film that is hard to find fault with.

The production received an excellent score from AdoroCinema readers, who gave it 4.3 stars out of a possible 5. Our review gave the movie 4 stars, highlighting that "Edge Of Tomorrow (in the original) has great visual effects and incredible production design. The costumes, especially the armor, are very realistic, somewhat reminiscent of Neill Blomkamp's Elysium."

However, although the critical reception was good, the box office was lower than expected. Warner Bros. took a million-dollar risk with an investment of up to 178 million dollars, so the results had to be excellent for the film to be considered a success. In the end, Edge of Tomorrow managed to save itself with a box office of 370 million dollars, which would have been a real success if it hadn't had such a high budget.
